LGBT History Month is an opportunity for us all to remember the contribution our community has made to society. It is a chance to reflect on the trials and tribulations those who have gone before us have gone through so that we can enjoy the freedoms we do today.
It is also important that we remember the many people who are still suffering today from the effects of homophobia .By celebrating LGBT History Month we can empower each other to move forward so that we too can make a difference towards improving the quality of our lives, wherever we live.

As one of the oldest gay charities in the UK, London Lesbian and Gay Switchboard has a strong sense of LGBT history. We have played a major role in the LGBT community since we were founded in March 1974: for instance, we were one of the first organisations to give out information on HIV/Aids in the early 1980s, and our training materials then became the foundation for the National Aids Manual; our volunteers went on to found many of the UK's HIV charities; we were one of the main resources when the Admiral Duncan was bombed. We hope to carry on taking a central place in the LGBT community's future as we have done in its past.

The Southwark LGBT Network is a safe space (far from the bars and clubs) for those who live, work and play in Southwark. The Network offers a range of events for the LGBT community in the area to explore, share, discuss and celebrate a shared heritage. The programme of events is developed in partnership with the Southwark Council generated from ideas from the local LGBT community.
Southwark Council backed the first launch of the LGBT history month in 2004 and through the LGBT community development worker the LGBT community fed back that they have found the LGBT history month a positive way to bring people together and share and create LGBT history.

| "LGBT History Month is very important for every young member of LGBT community because it takes away the stigma and feeling of being alone and being different.
LGBT HM is a way to show young people what our culture is all about - it's about diversity and we are proud of it! It makes all people conscious of the social reality they live in and is a very good opportunity to appeal for equality and challange homophobia."

An important aspect of LGBT History Month is to deal with the historical and continuing legacy of silence surrounding LGBT lives, particularly with reference to harassment.
This visibility is important to Galop because for the last 25 years we have worked to provide a voice for London’s LGBT people experiencing harassment and discrimination from the police as well as wider society, and we continue to be a driving force in improving the way the police work with our communities.
Ending the culture of silence and shame is integral to Galop’s work and helps us to build community confidence to report incidents which in turn helps to improve policing and safety for future generations of LGBT people.

Positive East, formed from the merger between The London East AIDS Network (LEAN) and The Globe Centre, has for over 20 years successfully delivered services to all people affected by HIV living and working across East London.
LGBT History month contributes in recognising and celebrating the achievements and progress made over the years as we continue to strive to ensure total legal, social and cultural acceptability for all, whilst embracing and highlighting our diversity. We all owe a debt to those that have striven before us; we all have a responsibility to ensure we continue to highlight the inequalities and discrimination which still exist, for future generations.
