Films: Playing the Part and The Story about Gay's the Word
A film by Lizzy Thynne about Claude Cahun, one of photography's unsung heroines. Born as Lucy Schwob in 1890, Claude was one of the greatest, yet barely recognised photographers of the 20th century. Born into a French literary family, she fell in love with her step-sister, Suzanne Malherbe. Going on to become a member of Andre Breton's surrealist set in France, she aided the Resistance in Jersey and narrowly escaped death at the hands of the Nazis. The film features archive footage, Cahun's own words and images and collaborative choreography by Lea Anderson (founder of the Cholmondeleys)
The Story about Gay's the Word is a 20 minute film about the famous bookstore, first established in 1979. It is followed by a Q & A session with Jim McSweeney, the owner.
