Sylvester was an outsider - he was an out, gay, African-American who dressed in drag and sang with a thundering falsetto. He had great success with hits such as 'Mighty Real' and 'Do you wanna funk?' His immense talent and individuality made him stand out. He was one of the first stars to publicly admit he was HIV+ - an unsung hero and a hugely important figure in recent LGBT History.

Six years into the Thatcher era, two years before Section 28, My Beautiful Laundrette (directed by Stephen Frears and written by Hanif Kureishi, 1985) depicted a romance between Omar (Gordon Warnecke) and Johnny (Daniel Day-Lewis): Omar the perfect Thatcherite, Johnny the skinhead. Dodgy deals, racism, queerbashing: a window into the past or a reflection of the present day? How have the LGBT communities changed in the two decades since this film was made? How has the UK changed? What was the cafe in the Edinburgh LGBT Centre called in 1985? The screening will be held at Sala Cafe, and will include hors d'oeuvres and the chance to win a bottle of wine.
