Doncaster Celebrates LGBT History
Month in Style
Hope you are well and enjoyed
all the celebrations and events throughout this years LGBT
History Month. Thought I'd share with you how our
event this year...
Having had the last 2 years
in the Mansion House and collated thoughts and wishes for
the future from LGBT who attended, many of which were more
high profile events in Doncaster. We decided this year to take the risk and
turn it into a high profile open air celebration / festival
type event. The flag still flew above the Mansion House
and on the Tourist information Center and on the Gay bar in
the Market Place and on the Corn Exchange building along with
6 banners around the town on various buildings " Doncaster
Celebrates Diversity, February is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual,Transgender
History Month. There was no getting away that something
was happening..
Our aim this year was to have
displays in the Corn Exchange and utilise the entertainment
area outside between the corn Exchange and Bar NY (gay bar)
whilst the market was open!!!!!!! providing entertainment
for all ages, stilt walkers, jugglers, face painters, singing
dancing and a classic pop band Ti Amero oh I nearly forgot
and a 8ft walking / talking Rainbow Tree!!!
Many people from all communities
joined in viewing the displays, dancing and singing outside.
It was also witnessed was that
the stall holders where singing to and dancing to "
dancing queen and YMCA" an impressive sight to say they
weren't happy when they found what the event was about at
the start. But the end of the day they all had Pink Balloons
on their stalls, got involved and stated this was the best
market day they'd had financially and entertainment wise.
We certainly had turned attitudes towards LGBT around this
year.
It was estimated at
least 400 to 500 people attended throughout the
day, many bringing children which was great to
see. Some were just passing through who also stopped
and got involved, and some were from out of Doncaster,
Manchester, Sheffield,
Rotherham, Leeds to support Doncaster.
One of the aims for
the day was to recruit LGBT people t to
be part of a Doncaster LGBT forum, have a voice and
get involved in other LGBT events. 37 people signed
up to this, which is fantastic.
As always
we have a " thoughts and wishes" this
years were.............
"how fantastic is
this" ......."more events like this"........ " congratulations
to Doncaster for moving
forward on LGBT issues" ............." How proud am
i to be gay in Doncaster"....."
more and bigger events, this is just the start".........."
LGBT History I didn't know we had one, they made out it was
all bad at school, but I feel proud and supported today"
...............This clearly showed the progress DPAH/T
had made into trying to meet the needs of the LGBT community.
We also have a LGBT
History exhibition in the Doncaster Tourist Information
Centre which has been there from the 1st Feb till 9th
March for everyone to see.

Down memory lane
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transsexual (LGBT) society have had an active role at the university for several years. They met up with us to celebrate LGBT history month and gave us an insight into how society's views have changed about homosexuality over the years, as well as explaining their role as a society here at Swansea.

Scottish Executive and LGBT Youth Scotland fund full time post for LGBT History Month!
LGBT Youth Scotland and the Scottish Executive have teamed up and provided a full time post to deliver and market LGBT History month in Scotland.
Scotland has much to learn from LGBT History month UK and I hope that we will be able to forge strong links, and make February an awareness extravaganza, with fun and informative events, with great media coverage.
Susan Deacon MSP, a patron of LGBT Youth welcomed this initiative by LGBT Youth Scotland:
"I welcome this initiative by LGBT Youth. This is great opportunity for people to learn from the experiences of earlier generations and to celebrate the progress which has been made. But there is still much to be done to build a fair and tolerant Scotland and I hope that this work will help encourage (LGBT young) people to continue to press for change and to be confident in their ability to bring that change about."
If you would like to find out more about LGBT History Month Scotland, or would like to chat about putting on an event or raising awareness within your workplace then please contact ann.marriott@lgbtyouth.org.uk
LGBT History Month 2007 – it’s never too early!
Despite that LGBT History Month 06 seems to have only been a few weeks back, here at the Department for Constitutional Affairs’ Rainbow Network we are already looking ahead to next years LGBT History Month. In order to reach more people we are planning to publish a magazine celebrating the lives of both ordinary LGBT people and LGBT celebrities.
We have contacted people from the worlds of music, film, theatre, politics and activism to ask a few questions about what they think about the concept of history month, the way forward for inclusivity of LGBT people and how their sexual orientation impacted on their careers. We have also asked staff members to tell us their coming out stories, as well as asking for people to tell us about the first time someone came out to them.
LGBT History Month 2007 is less than six months away, and in conjunction with everything else the Rainbow Network is doing, it isn’t really that long!
